Besides GPUs, there are specialised accelerators such as TPUs (tensor processing units) in data centres and NPUs (neural processing units) in laptops and smartphones.

NPUs make it possible to run smaller models energy-efficiently directly on the device – for translation, image editing or speech recognition without the cloud, for example.
