Function calling (tool use)
Also: Tool Calling · Werkzeugnutzung · Funktionsaufruf
A language model deliberately calls external functions – such as a search, a calendar or a database.
You describe to the model which tools exist and what inputs they need. If the model recognises that a tool would help, it returns a structured call; the application executes it and passes the result back to the model.
This lets an assistant query current stock levels, enter appointments or perform calculations exactly instead of guessing. Function calling is the technical foundation of AI agents.
