Model Context Protocol (MCP)

An open standard through which AI applications access external data sources and tools in a uniform way.

MCP was published by Anthropic as an open standard at the end of 2024 and is now supported by many providers. An “MCP server” provides access to a file system, CRM or database, for example; any compatible AI application can use it.

MCP is often compared to a USB-C port for AI: instead of building separate interfaces for each model, one is enough. As with any integration, permissions should be granted deliberately and only trusted servers used.
