Symbolic AI
Also: Regelbasierte KI · GOFAI · Expertensystem
An AI approach that represents knowledge in explicit rules and symbols instead of learning it from data.
Early AI systems – such as the expert systems of the 1970s and 80s – worked with “if-then” rules written by hand by specialists. Their advantage: every decision is traceable.
Their drawback: the real world can hardly be captured completely in rules. Today learning methods dominate, but combined with knowledge graphs and rules (“neuro-symbolic AI”) the approach is attracting renewed interest.
