Robotic process automation (RPA)
Software “robots” that automate rule-based clicks and inputs in existing applications.
RPA imitates human operating steps – copying data from one screen, pasting it into another system, downloading reports. This works well for stable, clearly defined processes.
RPA itself is not intelligent; if an interface changes, the workflows break. Combined with AI (“intelligent automation”), unstructured documents and exceptions can also be handled.
