Foundation model

Foundation models are trained once at enormous cost and then used for countless purposes – directly via prompts, through fine-tuning or embedded in products. Large language models and multimodal models are typical examples.

The EU AI Act refers to “general-purpose AI models” (GPAI) and sets out specific obligations for their providers, for example on technical documentation and copyright.
