Reasoning model
Also: Denkmodell · Thinking
A language model that works through intermediate steps internally before answering, to solve complex tasks better.
Reasoning models use additional computing time while answering: they break problems down, check intermediate results and correct themselves before giving a solution. This improves performance especially in maths, programming and multi-step planning.
The price is longer response times and more tokens. For simple questions, classic fast models are often the better choice; many providers let you adjust the “thinking time”.
